Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
