Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
