Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
